Exterior of St. John Cathedral

St. John’s Cathedral, standing at the heart of the financial hub of the city, is usually busier than the surrounding business areas on Sundays. Opened in 1849 mainly for the British garrison at the time, the city’s oldest Anglican church of 170 years of history is a must-go place for the dedicated worshippers or curious visitors, not only because of its distinctively ornate architectural features but also its historical significance being the center of the capital of Victoria City during the colonial times.

Candles for worshipping

Structured in the early gothic style with a cross-like shape, painted in warm yellow colors with white trim, and embellished with stained glasses that display scenes of vernacular Hong Kong’s fishing village life – the church possesses the unusual elements that can be found nowhere else. There is also one feature of the cathedral that deserves praise: it is not installed with any air-conditioning in order to preserve the building at its most original appearance. But how do people cope with the humid heat? The ceiling fans and the pew seating made out of cane wicker do help cool people down a bit.

You are also entering the one and only private or freehold land of Hong Kong. As all of the land within the territory was owned by the British royal, it was exceptionally granted to the Church of England to cater to the needs of the European community in the past, especially the Governors of Hong Kong. There is a lot more about the historic building so do join their Sunday service to know better!
