Let me confess; among all of the Hong Kong’s iconic food, wonton wins a special place in my heart, always. It is so hearty and beautiful, yet so difficult to make. Speaking of heartiness, Sam Tsai Kee deserves my ultimate salute for its love for food and for people.
Yes, there are many wonton noodle places out there. Some are as successful as Mak’s or Tsim Chai Kee. But Sam Tsai Kee is probably the only that takes up the responsibility of serving the poor.
Over the past 40 years, Sam Gor, the owner of Sam Tsai Kee has been making wonton noodles. With sophisticated skills and quality food, he has climbed his way up, from a street hawker to the owner of 4 branches, but he never forgets the help he received when he was a teenage stowaway making his way to Hong Kong from China. It was a bowl of rice and money for the bus ride given by a stranger whom Sam Gor couldn’t find later despite trying hard. Yet, he has found his inspiration- to serve people with love and compassion. So for all these years, if anyone can’t afford food, he/she can get a bowl of wonton noodles for free at any one of the four Sam Tsai Kee branches.
See that’s heart in the wonton and it has to taste better than anything. Even the city has taken countless impacts in past few years, and ridiculously high rent has pushed everyone to the edge, Sam Tsai Kee is still trying its best to keep their food at the same price. Just this spirit alone deserves us to pay a visit. Don’t you agree?
