Carved out from space that formerly belonged to its neighbor bar, Room 309 serves innovative cocktails and excellent classics in a whole different mood.
Keeping half a street away from the hustle and bustle of LKF, the surreptitious bar is not to be found unless you know how. First, you must go next door to the The Envoy to request a key card at the “reception”. Then you will be allowed entry.
It’s a windowless space with dark, richly decorated interior barely touched by the dim lighting and candles. Room 309 easily relives that Victorian-era alchemist’s den. In fact, situated in The Pottinger building which has only six rooms to each floor, Room 309 is clearly projected as a fantastical place that ought not to exist. Mysterious. You probably can’t read they invisible menu unless you remove the plain backing to let the text show.
The Crystal Old Fashioned might not appeal to old fashioned purists, but is nevertheless a wonderful creation. Re-distilled peanut butter bourbon, handmade wood chips bitters and banana concentrate are mixed for a crystal clear, fugacious cocktail. With aroma of peanut butter strong on the nose, and hints of fruit lingering afterwards. Other cocktails, like the Gone Gimlet for innovative, and the 20th Century for classic, are all worth trying.
For a fancy, exceptional bar in Central, the prices at Room 309 are reasonable (around $130 for a cocktail mentioned above). What adds up to its value, though, is the creative idea and sophistication in creating experience by Antonio Lai, the man behind the bars and its successful sisters. He had founded Quinary, a game-changer that brought multi-sensory mixology to Hong Kong and stays on the World’s 50 Best Bars list. Origin and The Envoy are two of his creations.
