You may have known the popular spots taking stunning pictures of the world’s famous skyline in Hong Kong but it may be worthwhile to put on your hiking attire, grab your camera and hike up to the peak of Lion Rock, where you can capture the most breathtaking peninsula view amid the ambience of the Lion Rock Spirit. Here’s the best route and some useful tips to help you enjoy the most.
From Head to Tail
The Lion Rock, which its structure resembles the outline of a crouching lion, connects Kowloon and the New Territories. The mountain holds a special place in locals’ hearts, where the Lion Rock Spirit comes to life – it symbolizes the perseverance of Hong Kongers during the last few decades of the city transformations. Throughout the past few years, people are also treating it as a symbolic place to voice their democratic views, hanging off yellow banners with words written like “I want universal suffrage” or “No Extradition to China”. The Lion Rock Spirit has been added with another layer of meaning – demanding a change.
This 7.7km trail is a moderate hike and requires some effort walking on uneven surfaces. You should be able to make it to the top if you work out sometimes still, but it is definitely much more challenging doing it in summer when it is sticky hot so climb up during fall & winter months unless you want to sweat it all out!
There are several ways to climb the 495-metre mountain but if you wish to experience how it feels climbing from head to tail of the lion. you’d better start the 3-hour sweaty journey from Tin Ma Court.
Directions to the starting point:
You could take minibus no. 53M from Lok Fu MTR station Exit A getting to Tin Ma Court (direction link: https://bit.ly/2SDWcHt). Once you get off, try to look for the stairs that are right opposite the intersection of Chuk Yuen Road & Kam Chuk Lane, and walk your way up to the entrance of Lion Rock Park from where you will see the sign of the trail.
You will have an easy start spending the first hour walking on concrete stairs, and along the way up to the Hong Kong Memorial Pavilion you will find a spot to get the first glimpse of the most awaited scenery. Now rest yourself a bit under the pavilion, head east, and be ready to walk ups & downs on uneven paths within the next 30 mins. Before reaching the peak, you will see some signs warning you to not get close to the cliffs, but if you insist, expect to get your hands dirty to climb up a set of narrow stone steps.
