Looking for some traditional breakfast place in central? Law Fu Kee is the place for you. Opened in the 1950s, Law Fu Kee has kept its recipe and decoration for decades.
As a congee specialist, Law Fu Kee has nailed it. The congee is prepared overnight to ensure a smooth and creamy texture. All the congee served is raw boiled (生滾粥), i.e. the ingredients are brought to boil in the prepared congee base upon ordering. There are lots of ingredients to choose from. Pig giblets congee (及第粥) is one of the favorites of the locals. The congee includes different kinds of giblets including blood and liver. If you prefer something mild, try grass carp belly which tastes fresh and smooth. Deep-fried Chinese breadsticks are a common snack to go with congee. Do come in the morning for it as it will be sold out by lunch.
Other than congee, the most famous dish at Law Fu Kee is Deep Fried Dace Balls. The fish is grounded, made into a paste, and brought to a deep fry. Don’t forget to dip it into the fresh and salty clam sauce (蜆蚧醬) for an exotic experience. The fishy taste may not appeal to everyone but it remains the favorite of many. In fact, the dish was so popular that the shop made it into neon light signage that extended from the entrance of the shop to attract customers. Unfortunately, due to structural restrictions, it was taken down a few years ago and will be put into a museum. Of course, this has not prevented people from locating and enjoying the delicacy. Give it a try and see if you like it.
