Lan Kwai Fong was said to be “broken ghost place” (爛鬼坊)  in Cantonese before the Second World War, as it was dedicated to street hawkers to sell second-hand or abandoned stuff. Meanwhile, the present name of Lan Kwai Fong literally means “orchid cinnamon square” which suggests “streets filled with orchids and fragrances” in a broader sense. This can be explained by the fact that the prostitutes used to pick up clients in LKF, formerly a red-light district used by British soldiers.

Right now Lan Kwai Fong is already turned into the number one Hong Kong nightlife hot spot where over 90 restaurants, bars and clubs are located. The atmosphere ranges from posh wine to raucous shots and street food. Guests can always find the right place and enjoy the perfect night out here. LKF is not only popular among the tourists, but also a famous expatriate and locals haunt in Hong Kong for dinning, drinking and clubbing.

A classic Weekday at Lan Kwai Fong

In Hong Kong, the bars usually serve drinks at Happy Hour Deal from 5pm to 8pm. In presence of the Happy Hour Deal, a regular beer costs HK$50 while a glass of cocktail costs HK$70, on average; however, the prices can go up to HK$80 and HK$100 respectively after the Happy Hour is over.

Here is a good new to the ladies: Hong Kong bars and pubs have the tradition of ladies night in which girls can receive free drinks or even free entry to the clubs. It usually happens on weekdays (i.e. Monday to Thursday). However, don’t expect the free drinks are in high quality. The bartenders usually mix the drinks with water so as to cut the cost.

In the view of over a hundred of bars and clubs in LKF, you must be wondering which ones are the more popular ones. First for the clubs, Play, Dragon-I, Volar, Levels, Bungalow and Zentral are the names you always hear in LKF. If you desire to do clubbing in Hong Kong, I would recommend you to check them out starting at 12 midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in which the clubs would be busier.

A kind reminder to all of you: Hong Kong clubs are pretty strict in term of the dress code. Guys cannot access the clubs with sleeveless top and flip-flop.

For the ones who are tired of crowded clubbing night, you may be interested in Insomnia, Graffiti and China bar which are the well-known pubs with a small dance floor. If you love to listen to the live music but do not want to do the classical Hard Rock Café, you may opt for Insomnia and Graffiti. They often have bands playing live music. If you are looking for a quieter place which offers special cocktails, you may try Brickhouse, Ce La Vi, Lily & Bloom and Employees Only. Whisky fans do check out Club Qing.

Talking about drinks, we cannot skip the Pub Crawl in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Pub Crawl organizes Horse Races and LKF Pub Crawl every Wednesday and Thursday (occasionally on Saturday) respectively. Go check its website out if you are interested.

LKF is always crowded in festivals like Halloween, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Themed events will be organized sometime at special occasions. Therefore, It is suggested to check the Lan Kwai Fong official website for the updated information when visiting Hong Kong. Don’t miss out this great and fun part of Hong Kong!

A typical Halloween night at LKF

Locating in the neighborhood full of worth-going attractions, you should go check out the nearby spots like Hollywood Road, Pottinger Street, Antique Street, Tai Kwun and Instagram Wall (Graham Street) during daytime; dine at a nice restaurant in SoHo, another prime location to go out at night in Hong Kong; and then enjoy your night with drinks and music in Lan Kwai Fong.
