Hong Kong is never short of striking architecture being a skyscraper city itself. Those that capture the eyes of Instagrammers always are the perfectly symmetrical buildings – one of which is the one and only Lai Tak Estate.

Named after Michael Wright – the Father of Public Housing in Hong Kong, the connected cylindrical blocks perched on the hillside of Tai Hang look particularly captivating. It is one of the rare public estates that overlooks the mesmerizing Victoria Harbor view and each household has a balcony of its own, just like the upper class living in condos nearby. The grass-roots families could never dream of having private bathrooms and kitchens before Wright became the Chief Architect of the Public Works Department, changing the standards of public housing based on “Wright Principal” that has bettered the living standards of thousands of locals.

You will have to spend some efforts walking up the slope along Tai Hung Road but it only takes roughly 15 minutes. Try to be as low-key as possible if you want to take pictures inside the circular buildings, as it is forbidden due to the increasing disturbance to the residents by photo fanatics. If you succeed, you will get a feeling of time traveling by how the layers of lights are displayed through the tunnel of circles from the bottom to the top. Take the stairs rather than the elevator to get to the top – you can hide yourself better from the security officers by doing so! But again, please don’t cause any annoyance and respect the residents first.
