When you talk about Asian food, it is not uncommon you would find tofu on the list as tofu is so versatile that can be made into different texture itself and goes well with other ingredients.
For a city that loves tofu so much (okay, I am speaking for myself), I would recommend you to visit the most signature tofu eatery in town, Kung Wo Tofu Factory, to surprise your taste bud with the rich soy flavour in different shapes and forms. It has a history of over 100 years and the current shop has been passed down and inhabited in Sham Shui Po since 1958. It is also listed on the Michelin guide 2020.
Stepping into the eatery you will find that it has preserved the traditional retro interior design of green and white mosaic tiles for the floor and signboard. The shop is divided into two areas – the takeout area is where the locals would buy various types of tofu and its by products for cooking, and the dine-in area is where you can try out the freshly made tofu and soy milk.
Beancurd pudding is the all-time favourite of the local. It is available hot or cold, and I cannot have it without adding the brown sugar on top, it enhances the taste and the texture that the sandy brown sugar brings a bit of sweetness to the refreshing and silky pudding. Soy milk is also served warm or cold, and following the trend of healthy diet, they do offer less sugar and sugar-free option. Besides, the stuffed beancurd with fish paste and the fried tofu skin are the savory choices of street food.
If you are planning your street food tour around the Sham Shui Po neighbourhood, Kung Wo Beancurd Factory is a must-visit snacks point.
