Canton noodles earns its significance amongst the Hong Kong cuisine because, as you may notice, we totally fond of pairing different ingredients with noodles, like wonton dumpling and beef brisket. So, if there is a handmade noodle making factory in the neighbourhood, it would be one of the great assets the community could have. And in the hustle and bustle Central area, there is one that have been running for over 60 years – Keng Kei Noodle Factory.
Situated in Peel Street next to the Graham Street Market, Keng Kei is famous for its freshly made canton noodles in various flavour and texture. The current owner George took over the shop from the founding old couples who stepped down for retirement in recent years. The shop is of an open-door setting where you can watch how George produces the noodle-of-the-day all on his own.
George is a friendly guy who loves sharing his story and all the things he knows. I can tell he enjoys crafting the noodles a lot because he always passionately introduces the noodles in detail and shares his favourite recipes with customers, despite he has to commute all the way from New Territories to Central every day and the procedures look routine.
He carries several signature handmade noodles and also wonton skin, including shrimp-roe noodles and Shanghaiese noodles. During Chinese new year, the shop will be full of crowd buying the noodles as gifts like the premium abalone noodles and all the products will sold out quickly.
If you wander around the old-meets-new Central, swing by Keng Kei Noodle Factory to get some noodles as souvenir, and do remember to spare more time as George will probably have a lot to share with you !
