How can you miss “Siu mei” (燒味), the Cantonese roasted meat, when you are in Hong Kong? Different kinds of fresh meat. Pork, goose, duck, chicken and, sometimes, pigeon. Roasted over an open fire or in a huge rotisserie oven. Special, flavourful barbecue sauce. Boom! An art piece of barbecue. What’s better than trying Siu Mei in one of the oldest Siu mei shops in Hong Kong – Joi Hing Restaurant?
Joi Hing Restaurant is famous for its “Char siu” (叉燒) – barbecued pork and “Siu ngor” (燒鵝) – roasted goose. No worry if you are not a fan of pork and goose! You can still go for roasted duck (Siu aap – 燒鴨) and steamed chicken (plain fresh chicken with ginger scallion dipping sauce/ soy sauce; Bak chit gai – 白切雞) or Soy sauce chicken (豉油雞).
I would recommend you ordering the dish with either drink or soup, since the flavourful sauce may be pretty salty to the one who uses to eat clean. They offer different home-made Chinese soup every day. If you don’t fancy hot drink, you can go for iced lemon tea or milk tea. They are both the classical choice of the Hong Kong people.
However, Joi Hing is not very tourist-friendly restaurant. They do not provide English menu. So if you want to check it out, here are some useful phases (usual dishes locals order) you may want to learn before going there:
- Char gai faan (叉雞飯) – Rice with barbecued pork and chicken
- Siu ngo fann (燒鵝飯) – Rice with roasted goose
- Siu aap faan (燒鴨飯) – Rice with roasted duck
Besides its “Siu mei”, Joi Hing is also one of the oldest Hong Kong style restaurants in the town. The owners started selling the roasted meat from late Qing dynasty in Guangzhou, then extended it to Wan Chai before Second World War (WWII). As the place was closed for a while during WWII, It is named as Joi Hing which literally means re-prosperity, after the war. Since then, Joi Hing has resumed the business with this name.
Because It is located in Wan Chai where many businessmen work, together with its well-known “Siu mei”, It gets extremely busy during the weekday lunchtime (12:00-14:00). Hopping over at night or in the weekend can help you to avoid the line. Also, its setting is similar with “Cha Chaan Teng” (茶餐廳), so don’t expect a cosy dining environment where you can chill and chitchat with hours.
Be prepared to share your table with other customers and enjoy the staple of the Cantonese cuisine!
