Hong Kong, the long-recognized international financial hub, has been struggling its way to catch up with the technology and innovation industry. With its high rent and lack of investment, it has fallen behind nearby cities like Shenzhen, Beijing, Seoul, and Singapore.
Since the start of the millennium, the Hong Kong Government has been putting effort into improving the Hong Kong innovation industry. The set-up of Hong Kong Science Park is to provide a campus-life environment marketed for high-technology enterprises and to promote interaction and innovation at both local and global levels. However, it doesn’t go as planned.
Hong Kong does not lack technological research, in fact, university research always scores high in worldwide ranking. However, locals are unwilling to take part in the innovation industry. The concepts of earning money and stability were planted since young, either by doing property development or being a lawyer or doctor. Technology is considered a high-risk career with no guaranteed income. Also, concepts are easily developed but there is a lack of space due to high rent for putting into practice. There was a student from China who studied in Hong Kong but he chose to return to Shenzhen to set up his own firm DJI, which is now the world-leading drone company.
Despite saying all these, we do have some pioneers working towards a more high-tech world. If you are taking a pit stop on your cycling journey, look for Food-on, located on 1/F of Building 17W. The food may not be exceptionally good, but it’s definitely worth a try to check out what robots can do. All the dishes are cooked and delivered by robots. They not only serve food within the restaurant but also deliver takeaway to the office upstairs. No human involved at all!
