The recently renovated Hong Kong Museum of Art has made herself stand out from the waterfront. The rippling glass facade echoes the waves of Victoria Harbour. Within the building, there are floor-to-ceiling windows on every floor, which you will see Hong Kong’s most famous work of art – the skyline and the harbor.
The museum collections reflect the uniqueness of Hong Kong, being the mid-point of east and west. There are 12 exhibition spaces that feature different topics including Chinese antiquities, paintings and calligraphy, and Hong Kong contemporary art. An important collection is China trade art, which is a unique type of paintings produced during the 18th and 19th centuries when Hong Kong was coming to prominence internationally. The western traders had to go to specific artists that produced these paintings as a kind of memorabilia.
“HKMOA reads my mind. The exhibition revealed my inner thoughts to the public and I’m overwhelmed. The best thing being an artist is to have met someone who understands me” said Mr. Wu Guanchong, a contemporary Chinese painter widely recognized as a founder of modern Chinese painting, in one of the exhibitions by HKMOA in 2002. Since then Mr. Wu has seen HKMOA as his museum partner and donated most of his paintings of his later life, including his favourite, Twin Swallows, to HKMOA. One of the exhibition spaces is now dedicated to Mr. Wu permanently, which reveals how Mr. Wu’s thoughts and lives have been impacted by the cultural revolution.
To engage the public and locals, there are numerous free guided tours on different exhibitions each day, check out the official website for the schedule. Otherwise, an audio guide is also available by scanning the QR code on the exhibition panel. It gives everyone a general idea of what the curator is trying to tell.
If you’ve got a few hours in Tsim Sha Tsui, HKMOA is definitely worth a visit.
