Hoi On Café is one of the oldest bing sutts (冰室) in Hong Kong. With a history of over 60 years, it is located at Connaught Road, which was used to be along the harbourfront with over 20 dockyards and seamen were their key customers. “Hoi On” literally means “sea safe” in Cantonese, a phrase to wish sailors to return home safe from seafaring.
The café’s decoration remains in the 1950s. Despite the exterior looks a bit worn off, places are kept clean and tidy as well as their food. Instant noodle is a common item in bing sutts as it is cheap and can be stored for a long time. The toppings in Company Noodle (鍋仔公司麪) include everything you can ever imagine – spam, bbq pork, spiced pork cubes (五香肉丁), sliced beef, egg and veg. You will be fulfilled just by looking at all the toppings when it’s served. In Hong Kong, if the name of the dish consists of the word “company”, the dish is the signature item and includes a lot of ingredients.
Another item not to be missed is Scrambled Egg with Corned Beef and Spring Onion on Toast (香蔥碎牛滑蛋厚多士). The spring onion is made on point that it is not soggy yet not irritating. Once it’s served, the staff will ask if you want to have some pepper with it. It’s the best to have it as soon as it’s served, otherwise, the toast will absorb the oil and become soggy.
For drinks? HK style milk tea and Iced Red Bean with Milk are the conventional ones, but what about the cross over? Hot Milk Tea with Red Bean (熱奶茶加紅豆) – The staff claimed it gave you the feeling of first love. Whether it’s true? Try it out yourself.
Come and immerse yourself in a nostalgic afternoon after exploring the old Hong Kong in Sheung Wan.
