Ho Lee Fook! You probably will shout out loud laughing as you see this fusion Chinese restaurant.
Inspired by Dai Pai Dong and Cha Chaan Tengs and the spirit of late-night Chinatown hangouts in 1960s new york, Ho Lee Fook on Elgin Street, Central serves Chinese flavour with pan-Asian and European influences in a hip, trendy setting since 2014.
This funky Chinese kitchen will surprise you with its cool interior design, in particular, a hundred of gold-plated waving cats on the wall! That’s how you get impressed with its tongue-in-cheek name.
Featuring an open kitchen on the ground level and a basement dining-bar area, with moody lighting, loud music, slate grey walls and ebony furniture, the restaurant successfully creates a clubby feel.
Meaning ‘good fortune for your mouth’, Ho Lee Fook has a brief but intriguing menu. Mom’s “mostly cabbage, a little bit of pork” dumplings with sacha soy dressing is as simple as it is hearty. With hint of tang from the dressing and a tinge of spice from the chopped chilli, it makes a popular appetiser.
The hamachi, cucumber, lemon jam, horseradish and puffed buckwheat is another signature dish. Presented like an ‘ahi poke’, it provides an interesting combination of tastes and textures.
Overall, the creations at Ho Lee Fook are delicious and daring. The Chef Jowett Yu brings his global cooking experience to modern sharing dishes such as lamb dan dan noodle and kurobuta pork Cha Siu, making a solid new addition to Hong Kong’s fusion scene.
Although it may not be one for the purists, for those who are open-minded and fun loving, Ho Lee Fook is a must-visit destination.
