I used to think Hong Kong people are more on the side of grimness and tensed-up.  Along my journey of research of and introduction to local alcohol brands, however, I’ve completely shattered this belief.  There are crazy people in this city—a lot of them actually—and many of them reside in the booze industry. Heroes Brewery is just another living example of wild imagination and playfulness combined with craftsmanship.

The label acquired its name as each beer is personified by a hero, though you’d be wrong to think these heroes are supernatural beings who always have a 6-pack and only disguise to look like us.  Each character takes inspiration from a mortal individual from any walk of life, such as a musician or a chef. The creative process starts with an in-depth interview with the subject by Heroes’s brewer and illustrator. Through understanding the person’s background, job nature, palate, etc., they tailor-make a flavour that suits them and represents them.

The muse of “Hunk Sir” is a homebrew fanatic expat.

Whenever there is light, there is shadow.  If you want to have a taste of bad boy, you cannot miss their Villains collection.  The fictional origins (they better are!) of these villians are just as intriguing as the adapted hero stories. They certainly have me anticipated for their next antagonist as if it’s Disney’s next villain re-imagination film.

The villain’s chic black can itself is worth the money.

Beer is a universal language; still, sometimes it encompasses local elements that gives you a chuckle. For Heroes it’s the back story of Si L Dan IPA: one day, a newbie ignorantly mixed various kinds of hops together when she was asked to repackage them, thinking all hops were the same. Rather than voiding them, Si L Dan IPA was spontaneously launched, where Si L Dan literally means “what-f***ing-ever” in Cantonese, and has become one of their bestsellers.

Heroes may be young in the Hong Kong craft beer scene, but they are as assertive and ambitious as their name suggests. I’d argue that they indeed possess superpowers. In fact, the biggest of all times—faith.  Faith in the power of people, of excellence, and of the pride they share when they brand themselves “made in Hong Kong”.
