No one in Hong Kong would argue Dai Pai Dong (open air food stall) is a dying heritage. What’s so special about them? Isn’t it just street food stalls like any other countries in Southeast Asia?

Dai Pai Dong was very popular in the 50s because they provided cheap food for the poor to survive in Hong Kong. 60 years has passed and now Hong Kong has become an international financial center, many Dai Pai Dong gave up their licenses for the sake of improved hygiene standards. By now, there are only 28 licensed Dai Pai Dongs surviving today.

Having served all walks of lives for generations, Dai Pai Dong has become a way of dining for the common people in Hong Kong. (Many famous restaurants like Joy Hing, Yung Kee, and Kau Kee were all started as Dai Pai Dong before they gained their fame today.)

Compared to the history of Dai Pai Dong, Glorious Cuisine is the new kid around the block. Ming, the current owner, inherited the business in 2000 when he was only a chicken butcher. Thanks to his stubbornness, he turned Glorious Cuisine into one of the best Dai Pai Dong in Hong Kong nowadays!

Here are some recommendations for you:

Deep Fried Squid Paste Twisted Donuts – (鬼馬油炸鬼) HKD 88

Chicken in Special Soy Sauce – (招牌頭抽雞) HKD 368

***WATCH OUT***there is bone inside the chicken and you are NOT supposed to eat the chicken head! ????

Diced Beef with Wasabi Sauce – (芥末牛柳粒) HKD 108

There are so many great dishes here and I cannot list them here, but here are some more recommendations for you:

  1. Dishes are served family style, it is best to go there with a bigger group so you can try more dishes in one meal.
  2. If you have to choose where to sit, go for outdoor sitting next to the street with best Dai Pai Dong spirit. Unless you have a very high hygiene standard.
  3. Drink Blue Girl beer. Well, I would say it is the “piss water” beer, but this is probably the most popular beer in Dai Pai Dong setting……
  4. If you are adventurous, you can buy some seafood nearby at Pei Ho Street Wet Market and bring them to the restaurant. That way you can try the famous seafood in Hong Kong the local way! Want a guide show you how to do it? Contact us for a private tour!

You probably want to combine your visit to Glorious Cuisine with the Sham Shui Po district. Sham Shui Po is the poorest district in Hong Kong but also the most authentic and best place for food. The best time to visit Sham Shui Po is around 16:00 – 18:00 when people are out to buy food for dinner.
