Buildings rise and fall in the blink of an eye in Hong Kong. Old heritage is particularly hard to survive in the city of rapid urban development, not to mention retaining its authenticity of use and functions. But the Former French Mission Building has a different story to tell and is worth your time appreciating.
Perched above the Queen’s Road Central and approached by the historic Battery Path, the red brick building is deemed to be one of the rare heritages in town that has served multiple social purposes throughout its nearly 180 years of establishment, as many of the architecture built during the early colonial days have either been demolished or rehabilitated for commercial purposes. It has transitioned itself from a residence house called “Johnston House” for the first two Governors of Hong Kong in the mid-1800s, the headquarter for the French missionaries in 1917, to the Court of Final Appeal until 2015. It is currently awaiting repurposing but would mostly be offices for law-related organizations.
The beautifully constructed heritage can bring you back to the old colonial Hong Kong. Decorated with white brims and columns in between the red bricks and granite, the 3-story multi-functional building is a classic example of the Neo-classical-style architecture from the Edwardian period. The Chapel and the cupolas topping off the roof also make the exterior extra captivating. It is a pity that it is not open to the public – but maybe a few pictures would help capture the memories?
