Within the white columns of the declared monument, Flagstaff House, it’s a small museum dedicated to ceramic tea wares and ancient antique ceramics.

Entrance

In the past, tea drinkers were regarded as the ‘academic’ and ‘cultural elites’ of the society. The practice of drinking tea was considered to be an expression of personal morality, education, social principles, and status. It led to a great and delicate production of teaware. One of the collections provides a very fine example – Twelve Month Cups in Wucai Enamels (五彩十二花神杯) from Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. The set consists of twelve cups of eggshell porcelain, each painted with the flower or plant of the month and on the reverse written with a poem. A complete set of month cups is very rare and we are glad to have the full set in the museum.

After understanding different tea types and culture, why not try them at the LockCha Tea Room to make the experience complete. The fully decorated tea room offers nearly 50 kinds of Chinese tea and complement with vegetarian dim sum. Although it’s a bit pricey, it’s definitely worth it. If you come in group, try a few tea types to taste the difference. Each tea has its own optimal brewing duration, ranging from 10 seconds to 2 minutes. Check with the staff for the information to get the best taste of the tea. After drinking the first cup of tea, sniff the bottom of the cup for the beautiful aroma.
